Will I Look Frozen? Honest Answers Before Your First Tox Appointment

Almost every first tox consult at our Walker studio starts the same way. Not with a question about units or price. With some version of: "I just don't want to look weird."

Fair. Everyone has seen the frozen forehead, the surprised brows, the smile that doesn't quite reach the eyes. If that's the picture in your head, of course you've been putting this off.

So here are the questions women in Grand Rapids actually ask before their first appointment, answered the way Chelsey answers them in the chair.

The short version
  • The frozen look comes from dose and placement. The product isn't the problem.
  • Dysport often starts working in two to three days and looks its best around two weeks.
  • Results typically last three to four months, then fade gradually.
  • If you stop, your muscles go back to normal. Your lines don't come back worse.

Why do some people look frozen?

Because someone used too much, in the wrong spot, without studying how that particular face moves.

Dysport is a neuromodulator, the same category of treatment as Botox. It relaxes the specific muscles that crease your skin when you frown, squint or raise your brows. How much it relaxes them is a choice. A skilled injector can soften a line while leaving enough movement that you still look like yourself when you talk, laugh and react.

That choice depends on things your provider should be looking at before she picks up a syringe. How strong your muscles are. Where your brows naturally sit. Whether you lift your forehead every time you talk. How expressive you are in general.

A natural result isn't luck. It's planned.

For a first appointment, a conservative approach usually makes the most sense. It's easy to add a little more at your next visit. You can't take it back out.

What does Dysport actually do to wrinkles?

It works best on dynamic lines, the ones caused by movement. The 11s between your brows, horizontal forehead lines and crow's feet are the classic three.

Lines that stay etched in even when your face is completely relaxed are called static lines. Tox can soften these over time, but deeper ones often need help from skin treatments like microneedling or, in some areas, filler. That's one of the reasons a real consult matters. Sometimes the right answer isn't more units.

Does it hurt?

Less than almost everyone expects. The needle is very small and each injection is a quick pinch that's over in a second. Most patients describe it as a few seconds of mild sting, and the injecting part of the appointment often takes just a few minutes.

If you've gotten your brows waxed, you've done worse.

How fast will I see results, and how long do they last?

Dysport tends to kick in quickly. Many people notice a change within two to three days, and the full effect shows up around the two week mark.

If you have a wedding, family photos or a holiday party coming up, book at least two weeks before so you're seeing the finished result, not the in-between.

Results typically last three to four months. Everyone metabolizes it a little differently, and people with stronger muscles or very active expressions may notice movement returning a bit sooner.

What if I don't like it?

This is the part people find most reassuring: tox is temporary. If it ends up feeling like a little more than you wanted, it softens over the following weeks and wears off completely within a few months. Nothing about it is permanent.

That's also why we think of the first appointment as a learning appointment. Your provider sees how your muscles respond, you see how you feel about it, and the next treatment gets adjusted to you.

Once I start, do I have to do it forever?

No. This might be the most common myth we hear.

If you stop, your muscles gradually return to what they were doing before. Your lines come back to where they would have been anyway. They don't come back deeper because you had treatment.

If anything, regular treatment gives those muscles a break from creasing the same spot thousands of times a day, which can help keep lines from etching in as deeply over the years. Staying on it is a choice, not a trap.

Will people be able to tell?

If it's done well, they'll think you slept more, changed your skincare or just got back from vacation. The goal is a softer, more rested version of your own face.

The people who look "done" were usually overtreated, which takes us right back to question one.

How much does tox cost in Grand Rapids?

Dysport is priced per unit, so your total depends on which areas you treat and how strong those muscles are. Softening the 11s alone looks very different from frown lines, forehead and crow's feet together. That's why an honest number really requires someone to look at your face first.

A few things worth knowing when you're comparing med spas around Grand Rapids:

  • Dysport units and Botox units aren't the same. Dysport is dosed differently, so a higher unit count doesn't mean you're getting more product. Compare total treatment cost, not unit price alone.
  • Ask who is injecting and what their background is.
  • Read the fine print on promos. A low per-unit price should come with clear terms, like a unit minimum, stated up front.

What your first appointment at Elevé looks like

  1. A real conversation. What bothers you when you look in the mirror, what you've tried before, and what you definitely don't want.
  2. Your face in motion. Your provider will ask you to frown, raise your brows and squint so she can see exactly how your muscles move.
  3. A plan you understand. Which areas, roughly how many units, and what to expect. Your consult can also include a skin analysis, and you'll go home with a written plan built around your goals, lifestyle and budget.
  4. Treatment. A few minutes of quick injections. Most patients go right back to their day.
  5. Aftercare. Generally, stay upright for a few hours, skip the workout and avoid rubbing the area for the rest of the day. Your provider will walk you through the specifics.

Who should wait on tox?

Tox isn't recommended if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, have certain neuromuscular conditions, or have an infection where you'd be treated. Dysport specifically isn't for anyone with an allergy to cow's milk protein. Bring your full health history and medication list to your consult and your provider will go through it with you.

Quick answers

Is Dysport the same as Botox?

They're in the same family of neuromodulators and treat the same kinds of lines. They're dosed differently, and Dysport often takes effect a little faster. Your provider will recommend what makes sense for your goals.

How long does Dysport last?

Typically three to four months. Strong muscles and very expressive faces can see movement return a little sooner.

How far before an event should I get tox?

At least two weeks. That gives it time to reach full effect and leaves room for a touch-up if one is needed.

Can I work out after Dysport?

Skip strenuous exercise for the rest of the day. You can usually get back to your normal routine the next day.
