Microneedling in Grand Rapids: Honest Answers on Pain, Downtime and Results

Microneedling has a branding problem. The name alone makes people wince, and the internet is full of photos of faces that look like they spent a rough day at the beach.

Then patients actually try it, and the thing we hear most afterward is some version of "wait, that was it?"

If you've been circling microneedling for a while, here's what it really does, what it feels like, how long you'll be pink, and how to tell whether it's the right treatment for your skin. Straight from the team at Elevé in Walker.

The short version
  • Numbing cream goes on first. Most people describe the feeling as vibration and light scratching.
  • Expect pink skin for one to three days, a lot like a mild sunburn.
  • A glow shows up in about a week. The collagen changes keep building for months.
  • Most goals call for a series, commonly three sessions spaced about four to six weeks apart.

What microneedling actually does

A pen with very fine needles creates thousands of tiny, controlled channels in the skin. Your skin reads that as a minor injury and starts its natural repair process, which includes making new collagen and elastin.

In real life, that tends to look like:

  • Smoother texture and makeup that sits better
  • Softer-looking acne scars
  • Pores that look less obvious
  • Better overall skin quality as fine lines soften

This treatment changes the skin itself instead of covering anything up. That's why it takes a little patience, and why the results last.

At Elevé we use the Eclipse MicroPen Evo, which lets your provider adjust needle depth area by area. Thin skin near the eyes gets treated differently than the cheeks, where acne scarring usually lives.

Does microneedling hurt?

Honestly, less than the name suggests. A topical numbing cream goes on first and sits for a while before anything starts.

Most patients describe the treatment as a vibrating, sandpapery sensation. Bonier spots like the forehead and jawline can feel a little spicier. Cheeks are usually easy. The treatment itself moves quickly, and most of your appointment is actually numbing and prep.

How much downtime is there, really?

Here's a realistic timeline for most patients:

  1. Treatment day Pink to red, warm and a little tight. Think mild sunburn.
  2. Days one and two Redness fades to a pink flush. Skin can feel dry or tight.
  3. Days three to five Some light flaking is normal. Most people are back to makeup and regular plans.

Our favorite tip: book on a Thursday or Friday. Most patients are back at work Monday without anyone noticing a thing.

You'll generally skip makeup for the first day, pause retinol and exfoliating acids for several days, and be serious about sunscreen. Your provider will send you home with aftercare specific to your skin.

When will I see results?

There are two timelines.

The glow. About a week after treatment, skin usually looks brighter and smoother. This is the part your friends notice.

The collagen. This builds slowly over the following weeks and months. It's why results from a series keep improving even after your last session.

For texture and scarring, most plans call for a series, commonly three sessions about four to six weeks apart. Deeper acne scarring can take more. After that, many patients come back periodically for maintenance based on their goals.

One session is a nice glow. A series is where the skin actually changes.

Is microneedling safe for my skin tone?

A real question, and a good one. Microneedling doesn't rely on heat or light to work, so it's generally considered a good option across a wide range of skin tones. If you have a history of dark spots after breakouts or irritation, tell your provider. She'll factor that into depth and aftercare.

Microneedling vs. a facial: which do you need?

We get asked this constantly at our Walker studio. It depends on where the concern lives.

A Glo2Facial makes sense when

You want clearer, brighter, more hydrated skin with no downtime. Event prep, congestion, or that dull, flat look Michigan winters are famous for.

Microneedling makes sense when

The concern is in the structure of the skin. Texture, acne scars, fine lines, pores that look enlarged. It asks for a few pink days and a series, but it's changing your skin, not refreshing it.

Plenty of patients use both. Microneedling to rebuild, facials in between, and medical-grade skincare at home to protect the results. That combination is usually where the best skin comes from.

What's PDRN, and why does it keep coming up?

You may have seen PDRN on your feed lately. It's a regenerative ingredient derived from salmon DNA, and it's often paired with microneedling to support the skin's repair process. If recovery and overall skin quality are big priorities for you, ask about it at your consult.

Why fall and winter are the best time to start in West Michigan

Freshly treated skin is more sensitive to the sun for a while afterward. That's tricky when summer means lakeshore weekends and patio season.

Once the days get shorter, you're outside less and it's much easier to protect your skin while it heals. Start a series in November and you'll be wrapping up around late winter, with your best skin ready before spring.

Who should wait on microneedling?

Hold off if you have active breakouts or an infection in the treatment area, are pregnant, have a fresh sunburn, or have taken isotretinoin (Accutane) recently. Flare-ups of conditions like eczema or rosacea are also worth mentioning. Bring it all up at your consult and your provider will tell you whether to go ahead or wait.
