What Is Radiesse? Collagen Filler in Walker, MI | Elevé

Ask most people to name a filler and you'll hear "lip filler" and maybe a brand name. Radiesse almost never comes up. For one specific kind of concern, it's one of the smartest tools in the room.

Here's what it is, what it does differently, and how to tell if it belongs in your plan.

First, what most fillers are made of

The fillers you've probably heard of, like Restylane and the RHA Collection, are hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is a sugar molecule your skin already makes. It holds water, adds volume, and can be softened or dissolved with an enzyme if it ever needs adjusting.

Radiesse isn't HA at all.

What Radiesse is made of

Radiesse is made of tiny, smooth microspheres of calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) suspended in a gel. Calcium hydroxylapatite is a mineral found naturally in your bones and teeth, which is part of why it's so good at structural support.

Two things happen after it's placed

  1. The day ofSupport you can see right away

The gel gives immediate lift and definition to the treated area. You leave the appointment already seeing a difference.

  2. The months afterSupport your body builds

As the gel is gradually absorbed, the microspheres act as a scaffold that signals your skin to make new collagen around them. That collagen is yours.

That second phase is the part most people don't know about, and it's why we describe Radiesse as lift now, collagen later. It sits somewhere between a traditional filler and a pure collagen stimulator like Sculptra.

Where it tends to shine

Radiesse is a firm product that holds its shape, so it comes up for structure more than softness. In the US, Radiesse (+) was the first injectable FDA approved to improve moderate to severe loss of jawline contour in adults over 21. It's also approved for moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, like the lines that run from the nose to the corners of the mouth.

In a consult, that usually sounds like:

  • "My jawline isn't as sharp as it used to be."
  • "I want definition, and I want it to last."
  • "My lower face just feels less firm than it did a few years ago."

Where it doesn't belong

Radiesse is not a lip product. Lips need something soft, flexible and adjustable, which is exactly what HA filler is built for.

It also can't be dissolved the way HA can. HA filler can be reversed with an enzyme called hyaluronidase, and Radiesse doesn't respond to it. This is exactly why the consult matters: product choice and placement get decided before anything is injected, by someone who does this every day.

How long does Radiesse last?

For many patients, Radiesse tends to last a year or more. How long it lasts for you depends on the area, how much product is placed, and how your body responds. Anyone who promises you an exact number is guessing.

Is Radiesse right for you?

It might be a good fit if your jawline has softened, you want definition that holds, or you like the idea of your own collagen doing some of the work.

It's probably not the right first step if you're after lips, you're new to filler and want something adjustable, or your main concern is texture or tone. For that last one, a skin treatment will do more than any injectable.

Sometimes the best plan combines products: HA where you need softness, Radiesse where you need structure. Sometimes Chelsey will tell you that you don't need filler yet. Both are good outcomes.

What the appointment is like

It starts with a consult. Chelsey looks at your facial structure, talks through what you want to change, and decides whether Radiesse, another product or a combination makes sense. Radiesse (+) contains lidocaine, a numbing agent, to help with comfort during treatment. Some swelling, tenderness or bruising for a few days is common with any filler, and you'll leave with aftercare instructions.

Questions we hear a lot

Is Radiesse a filler?

Yes. It's an FDA approved injectable filler that also stimulates your own collagen, which is what sets it apart from hyaluronic acid fillers.

How long does Radiesse last?

For many patients it tends to last a year or more, though results vary by person, treatment area and amount of product.

Can Radiesse be dissolved?

Not with hyaluronidase, the enzyme used to dissolve HA filler. That's one reason it's used for structural areas and placed after a thorough consult.

Can Radiesse be used in the lips?

No. Lips are best treated with a hyaluronic acid filler, which is softer and adjustable.

Do I need a consult first?

Yes. Radiesse is placed by Chelsey after a consult, so she can decide whether it's the right product for your face and goals.

Results vary from person to person. This article is for education and isn't a substitute for an in-person consultation. Treatment recommendations are made by a licensed provider after reviewing your health history.
